Music in Lent
A message from Rick McKnight
We work in a common goal that the music supports the liturgy. In Lent, our services are quieter and more solemn and the music follows suit. The First Sunday in Lent we chant The Great Litany in procession to open the service Instead of a joyful Gloria we sing a Kyrie (Lord, have mercy). This Lent we will sing David Hurd’s New Plainsong. This is very simple and will be sung without organ accompaniment. David Hurd is the Principal Musician at St Mary the Virgin in Times Square, NYC and previously was the Chapel Musician at General Theological Seminary where he influenced many clergy. There will be no organ music on Ash Wednesday, Maundy Thursday or Good Friday. This helps us to understand more the Forty Days of Lent.
