Wednesday Word from Rev. Grace: Created to Create!
You were created by a creative Creator to create!
This quote by theologian Lakisha Lockhart was shared at a diocesan clergy meeting this morning. It made me think, of course, about artist Alma Thomas, whose work we are celebrating this month at St. Thomas.
It is also a fitting word for back-to-school season. Most teachers in our region are preparing for classes, and students are not far behind. Our annual Backpack Blessing is this Sunday at both services. Our theme is from one of the lessons for the day: Learn to do Good.
We were indeed created by a creative Creator to create. We have the capacity to create destruction and chaos, of course, but God intends for us to create good. The goal of education is to learn to create good - by practicing compassion and empathy, studying the lessons of the past, learning to work in groups, and developing skills that help us create good in the world through work, service, and care for others.
School is not the only way we learn these things, but it is a key experience that shapes many people very profoundly. We ask a lot of schools and teachers, and we keep asking for more. So please hold teachers and schools and students in your prayers as classes begin. Reach out to teachers and school staff to stay thank you. Support the ministry of education, where our creative Creator is always at work, creating hope for the future.
Blessings,
Grace
