When the day of Pentecost had come . . .
The lesson from Acts 2 begins in this matter-of-fact way. The day of Pentecost had been celebrated for centuries as a harvest festival, fifty days after Passover. By the 1st Century, it had also become a celebration of the giving of the Law. It was a time of gratitude and remembrance of all that God had done. Pilgrims from many places made their way to the Temple in Jerusalem to bring their offerings and give thanks.
There were already many reasons to celebrate when the day of Pentecost had come, but on this day, the disciples received a wonderful surprise. God's Spirit showed up in a mighty way. The wind and fire recalled the thunder and smoke on the mountain when God gave the law. They were a sign that God was speaking again. The work of Jesus would continue in the life of the church.
We celebrate Pentecost every year by wearing red and renewing our baptismal covenant. Our celebration is a little different this year in this time of transition. But we trust that God's Spirit will still show up in a mighty way as we renew our baptismal vows and recommit to the work of Jesus. As a bonus, at the 10:30 service, our children will offer a Pentecost Pageant to tell the story. And at 9:30 in the outreach center, we will share in a Pentecost puzzle activity to remember this day.
Join us on Sunday as we celebrate the work of the Spirit!
Blessings -
Grace
