Wednesday Word from Rev. Grace - Music at St. Thomas
There's an early picture of the St. Thomas Choir hanging on the wall of the choir room. 23 people. All looking intently at their music. Hairstyles and glasses of the late 60's or early 70's. In a room that looks like it may be part of the Day School today.
It's a reminder that music has been central to the life of St. Thomas from the very beginning. Even before we built a glorious space for worship, before we had a powerful church organ to accompany our singing, St. Thomas members were dedicated to lifting God's praise through music. It is rare for a congregation of this size to enjoy the gifts of so many talented musicians.
We've had ten organists and choirmasters over the past 65 or so years. Rick McKnight has served the longest of them all - now beginning his 20th year. Bill and Janie Lee Bullock are not too far behind, serving among us for 17 years. And hundreds of singers have filled the loft and shared their voices and hearts over the years. Thank you all!
Join us this Sunday to celebrate the legacy of St. Thomas Music. Several choir friends from the past plan to attend. A gathering reception takes place at 9 on the patio and in the narthex, followed at 9:30 by choir rehearsal in the nave for those who want to sing. Also at 9:30, in lieu of our usual adult formation, we will gather in the choir room to share choir memories. Our worship at 10:30 will include an Act of Thanksgiving for St. Thomas Music. A reception in the parish hall following the service will celebrate the beginning of Rick's 2nd decade of leadership. (Use the form here to let us know you'll attend.)
Thanks be to God for all musicians and artists who offer their gifts to perfect our praises!
Blessings -
Grace
