Training and Background Checks for Volunteers
We promise in baptism to "seek and serve Christ in all persons" and "respect the dignity of every human being." One way we live out these promises is by seeking to create a safe environment for children, youth, and adults who take part in St. Thomas ministries.
All staff, all adults who work with children or youth, all vestry members, and others who make decisions affecting children are required by our diocese to take or renew Safeguarding God's Children training every three years. Training is offered online.Sign up for Safeguarding God's Children training here.
All staff members and vestry members, all adults who visit in homes, and all who lead small groups are required to take or renew Safeguarding God's People training every five years. This training is also offered online.

While training is required for those who serve in certain ministries, it is recommended for everyone. The training is free, and all are encouraged to participate. Safeguarding training includes guidance on inclusion of people of all identities and abilities. All St. Thomas members are encouraged to become familiar with Diocese of Atlanta policies for the protection of children and youth, available here.
Creating a place of safety also means learning to recognize racial bias and other forms of discrimination. All staff and vestry members are required to take Diocese of Atlanta Dismantling Racism Training, and all parishioners are invited to do so. The training is typically all day. Information is available here.
In addition, background checks are required for all staff, volunteers who work with children or youth, and adults who offer pastoral care. Background checks are repeated every five years.
Please complete the form below to begin the process of a background check at St. Thomas. Our Parish Administrator will submit this information to Verified First, the processing company we use. You will receive an email invitation from them to complete the process. This keeps your information secure and private. The cost to the church is $14 for most background checks. St. Thomas is glad to cover this expense as part of keeping our programs safe, but if you would like to make a donation to help cover the cost you may do so here.
